Joining instructions Gite managers Andy and Jo will be at the farmhouse on our arrival to help us settle in. Please aim to be there no earlier than 4pm as they will need time to prepare things after the departure of previous guests. A handy folder on local attractions and other practical stuff like supermarkets, bakers, etc will be provided. Andy and Jo's contact details are on the directions (see below).

Detailed directions, which sound very practical. I suggest we all download these and take them with us.

You'll see that Paul suggests a French mobile phone or SIM card. However, I have now decided to opt in to Vodafone's Roaming facility: £3 a day, but only on any day you use the thing abroad. Otherwise usual package, and no charge for incoming calls or texts. So just assume I'l receive your texts. I won't spend £3 just to say "OK"

Driving in France Remember you must not have anywhere on the car (even if switched off) a radar speed trap detector, whether as a dedicated unit or as one function of a satnav. Information here.

I already have one warning triangle. I have just bought, for:

£6.95 — kit: reflective vest and safety triangle (so, a second one)
£4.10 — second reflective vest (so, one per adult passenger)
£5.95 — headlamp converters
£4.99 — pair of French breath-testers
£8.99 — first aid kit
£8.95 — spare bulb kit

All this from Fairview Parade Motorist Discount Centre

Fortunately I have been able to renew Patti's car insurance including cover for France at a cost of only an extra £10 a year, from its usual renewal date of 2 August. Furthermore, my house insurance which includes car road rescue is already effective in Europe

Three bags of decaffeinated coffee
One tin of illy espresso coffee
Two large cartons of Scotts Porage Oats for the climbers

Food shopping in France Paul and Gill Matthews tell us . . .
. . . there are two markets each week in the nearby town, the main one on Sunday which is very good, (Paul urges us to go to it) and a mid-week one, which is smaller. There is a supermarket in the same place which is open on a Sunday until 12.00, as well as being open every day of course. There's a baker in the village too, but there's also a bread van that comes past the house every morning and toots outside the gates so we can go and get what we want.
